GLASS SHEET HOT FUSED WITH DIAMONDIFEROUS MATERIALS AND SANDS AND CHEMICALS AND MINERALS PRODUCED BY THE SOUTH AFRICAN MINING INDUSTRY

Unite has, in a new departure, experimented with firing and fusing different diamondiferous materials into glass. Here, the earth's minerals become the artist's materials, creating an alchemy that reinforces the mining theme uniquely and powerfully.

Glass, has a transparent light refracting qulity similar to diamonds, although it is not one of the seven crystaline structures. Diamonds endure; glass shatters. In the fusion the artist successfully attempts to strengthen the inate fragility of the transformation process; to heal the wounds. (Wendy Ward, May 2004)

South African sands sourced from specific sites: West coast / Kalahari desert / Kimberley – yellow ground near big hole / red sand from JHB Kimberley / Goldmine sands that contain cyanide and arsenic. Minerals, metal oxides and powders, ferric silicate, kaolin, ochres
